Our Purpose
The aim of Onni Children’s House is to give an opportunity for new life to orphaned, abandoned and at-risk Nepalese children and provide for their needs in a loving, safe environment where they can receive every opportunity to grow up as happy, well-balanced members of society with a hope and a future.
A lot of activities are being undertaken to rehabilitate and transform these children including feeding, medical care, clothing, provision of shelter, counselling and guidance, formal education and sports activities. With an education, children will be able to improve their living standards and that of their families, through access to higher wages due to their qualifications and knowledge and skills that will benefit themselves, their families and even their community.
The House
Onni Children’s House is located in Pokhara, a beautiful lakeside town at the base of the Himalayas, approximately 200km west of Kathmandu.
Onni Children’s House is now providing a home for 16 children (aged from 5-12 years old), with a view to expanding to be able to house 20 children in the coming years. Children are selected regardless of their religion, sex, colour or tribe. Children who have nowhere to call home and no one to care for them will be given priority. Onni Children’s House provides a family environment where children can grow and get the necessary skills in order to be independent and valuable contributors to their communities and largely the country’s economic and social development.
Onni Children’s House is established and managed by joint co-operation between Wind of Change International (Australia/Finland) and Namaste Children's House (Nepal).
Health
Full medical examination is conducted on arrival for the children. Treatment and vaccinations are given as required. NCH has existing arrangements with a local hospital as well as an in-house doctor who visits on a regular basis to check children’s health status.
Education
Education is a priority. The children are sent to a local private school to gain the best quality education available. In addition, an in-house teacher is engaged to coach children with lower academic standards to a level where they are able to cope better upon entering mainstream schooling. We believe that as the children are trained academically, they will enter society equipped with the necessary life skills and moral values that will enable them to make a significant and lasting impact on the future of Nepal.
Staff Capacity
It is imperative that the children are given high quality care and support. To enable this staff are required to be highly competent. Additionally, the aim is to build the capacity of the staff for their own confidence and contribute to providing a better future for them and their families. The growth in confidence, skills and job satisfaction for the staff will hopefully see them become even stronger role models for the children.
Onni Children’s House opened on the 26th of October 2008 and is currently providing love and care for 16 children - 8 girls and 8 boys. |
